For the "Digital Communication" course at Politecnico di Torino, I was tasked with creating a brief yet impactful video loop lasting 3 to 5 seconds. The challenge was to feature a celebrity or a character from a famous movie, and I couldn’t resist choosing the eerie twins from The Shining as my stars.

Sketching the Scene
I started by illustrating the twins entirely in Illustrator, putting my own spin on their iconic look. While drawing inspiration from existing artwork, I added unique details to infuse the twins with a touch of my personal style. Instead of placing them in their original setting, I chose the film’s infamous hallway, complete with its iconic carpet, to make the scene instantly recognizable and give the composition a distinct visual punch.
Bringing the Twins to Life
Once the illustrations were complete, I imported them into After Effects. Here, I added lighting effects and subtle movements to breathe life into the loop, capturing the unsettling vibe of the original scene.
The brief also required sound or music, and I opted for sound effects that perfectly matched the unsettling tone of my animation. These audio elements complemented the visuals, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that stays true to the chilling essence of The Shining.
My Creative Decisions
This project was a deep dive into the world of digital animation, where I learned to blend illustration with motion design seamlessly. It reinforced the importance of attention to detail and the power of subtle movements in creating an effective loop. The experience has inspired me to explore more complex animations in the future, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in just a few seconds of video.
Looking Forward
The success of this loop has motivated me to continue experimenting with character animations and atmospheric effects. I’m excited to apply these skills to future projects, creating visuals that not only capture attention but also tell a story in a matter of seconds.
